CABINET PAINTING VS. REPLACING: WHAT'S ACTUALLY WORTH IT?

Modern kitchen with freshly painted white cabinets

I get this question on almost every cabinet job we quote. A homeowner looks at their kitchen — dated oak, honey-stained, maybe a few doors that don't sit quite right — and asks: "Is it worth painting these, or should I just replace them?" It's a fair question, and it deserves a straight answer.

The honest truth is that most cabinets are excellent candidates for refinishing. The ones that aren't are a specific set of situations I'll walk you through. But if you're going into this thinking you have to spend $20,000 on new cabinetry to get a kitchen that looks new, you may be leaving a lot of money on the table.

The short answer: Professional cabinet refinishing typically runs $1,500–$4,500 for a full kitchen. Full cabinet replacement runs $10,000–$30,000+. If your cabinet boxes are structurally solid, refinishing gives you 90% of the visual transformation at 15–20% of the cost.

WHAT YOU ACTUALLY GET FOR YOUR MONEY

Refinishing — $1,500–$4,500

  • Completely transforms the color and finish
  • Professional spray application — smoother than brush
  • New hardware can be added for $200–$600 more
  • Kitchen is usable within 24–48 hours
  • No demo, no disposal, no plumbing disruption
  • Lasts 8–15 years with proper care

Replacement — $10,000–$30,000+

  • New boxes, doors, and drawer fronts
  • Can change layout and add storage
  • Custom options take 8–16 weeks lead time
  • Kitchen out of commission for 1–3 weeks
  • Requires countertop removal/replacement often
  • Lasts 20–30 years with quality cabinets

The numbers make it clear why refinishing is so popular — but the choice isn't purely about cost. It's about whether your cabinets are actually good candidates for painting in the first place.

WHEN YOUR CABINETS ARE GOOD CANDIDATES FOR PAINTING

The vast majority of kitchens we see in Lincoln and Omaha have cabinets built from solid wood or MDF — both of which hold paint extremely well when properly prepped. Here's what makes a cabinet a good refinishing candidate:

WHEN TO REPLACE INSTEAD OF PAINT

I'll tell you straight when we can't help you with a refinish. There are real situations where replacement is the right call, and I'd rather you know before we quote a job than be disappointed with the result.

HOW A PROFESSIONAL SPRAY FINISH ACTUALLY HOLDS UP

A lot of homeowners have had bad experiences with painted cabinets — usually from a DIY job or a painter who brushed cabinet paint on without the right prep or product. Brushed cabinet paint chips at the edges, shows brush marks in the finish, and doesn't hold up to daily use the way a sprayed factory-style finish does.

When we refinish cabinets, the process is thorough:

  1. All doors and drawer fronts come off and are sprayed in a controlled environment — not in your kitchen where dust settles into the wet finish.
  2. All surfaces are cleaned, deglossed, and sanded to give the primer something to grip.
  3. We apply a bonding primer specifically formulated for previously finished surfaces.
  4. Two finish coats of a catalyzed cabinet enamel — the same product used by cabinet manufacturers — are sprayed for a smooth, hard, cleanable finish.

Done right, a professional cabinet finish is hard, smooth, and cleanable. It handles daily wiping, grease splatter, and the kind of contact that cabinet doors see. We typically see 10–15 years of good service out of a quality refinish job.

Ask the right question: When getting quotes, ask what primer they use and whether doors are sprayed on-site or off-site. On-site brush application with standard wall paint is not a cabinet refinish — it's a paint job that will chip in six months. Make sure you're comparing the same thing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can you paint over stained oak cabinets?

Yes — this is actually one of our most common jobs. Oak has a pronounced grain that will show through the paint unless you fill it first. We use a grain filler as part of the prep process to get a smooth finish. If you want a completely flat, modern look, make sure whoever you hire is addressing the grain.

How long does the kitchen need to be out of commission?

For a typical kitchen of 30–40 doors, expect 3–5 days of active work. The kitchen is usable during much of that time since we work in sections and the doors are off-site for spraying. We typically have everything reinstalled and cured enough for light use within a week of starting.

What colors can you do?

Any color you want. We can match any Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams color, and we can color-match to samples you bring. The most popular colors we're doing right now are White Dove, Accessible Beige, Hale Navy, and Dovetail gray. Two-tone kitchens — dark lower cabinets, light uppers — are also very popular and we do them regularly.

Does it add value to my home?

A dated kitchen is one of the first things buyers notice. Updated cabinets — whether painted or replaced — improve how a kitchen shows and typically return well in resale. Refinishing is particularly good value if you're planning to sell in the next few years and don't want to spend $25,000 on new cabinetry before listing.
